Glory be to God for Dappled Things (Pied Beauty)
January 2002
SATB and organ

Text: Gerard Manley Hopkins
Glory be to God for Dappled Things (Pied Beauty)Commissioned by Kingston-on-Thames Parish Church for Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. 1st performance 2 June 2002. Dur: 6 minutes

This attractive and accessible setting of Gerard Manley Hopkins's exuberant song of praise should appeal to choirs looking for something different for harvest and for other celebrations of God's creation.

Paul Spicer makes skilful use of his resources. Vocal parts are never complex (although there is plenty to challenge the singers here) and there is a certain amount of unison writing. The idiom is basically tonal, with one or two interesting harmonic excursions and additions. The composer responds sensitively to the changing moods of the text; he clearly relishes the words, and invites the singers to respond to the different moods as he explores them with sensitivity and variety of colour.

Underlying all are the rhythms of a joyful, uninhibited dance of celebration; there are outbursts in the first part of the anthem, but, when the opening words are repeated, all the singers are invited to join in the dance as it builds to an exciting climax. You will need a very competant organist, with a secure sense of rhythm.

This is a very attractive and buoyant addition to the repertoire.
